Primer with SPF 50

When we launched an SPF50 Primer, many people were fascinated by the new formula and the role that a primer can play in everyday UV protection and as a smoothing base for make-up lovers.  Hopefully this blog will answer a few of your questions.

If you have a passion for beauty and cosmetics, don’t underestimate the significance of great skincare as a good base for your make up.  Preparation can be crucial and finding a primer that loves your skin can really help that prep. We recommend avoiding primers that include alcohol or fragrance, as fragrance can cause or increase the chance of skin irritation.[1]

Sometimes skincare routines can be lengthy with layers of serums, moisturisers and SPF – and that’s before you apply makeup. So a product that primes and protects your skin, could be the answer to help simplify things. But let’s face it, SPF should play a leading role in any daily smart-ageing skincare routine to provide the protection skin needs to remain healthy and glowing.

It’s a fact that unfortunately most makeup products with SPF lack enough protection against UVA rays. UVA rays can even penetrate through window glass and it is no secret that exposure to UVA has been linked to melanoma, freckles, hyper-pigmentation (especially those with darker skin types) and wrinkles. [2]

This is why skin smart people, professionals and dermatologists will advocate for a broad spectrum sunscreen as part of a daily routine every day. It may seem like there are too many rules when it comes to skin care sometimes, but using sunscreen properly is an important one.

Therefore, the new ALTRUIST Primer with SPF50 30ml is here to make life easier. If you feel like you need a product that serves to protect you from UVA and UVB rays, while also keeping your makeup intact and flawless, this product is your saviour.

This Primer feels extremely lightweight, so you do not have to worry about your makeup sliding around, or feeling like your makeup is cakey and heavy. ALTRUIST Primer SPF50 glides onto the skin and absorbs like a sponge. It leaves a bit of sheen on the skin without making you oily and is thus our most mattifying sunscreen yet.

The formulation sits well in facial hair, once it is thoroughly rubbed in. Our Primer is perfect because it leaves no white cast and is perfectly suitable for all skin tones. This means that it will also not affect your makeup application at all. As with all ALTRUIST sunscreens, this primer is also fragrance free, hypoallergenic and non- comedogenic. This means you can use the primer in abundance and as often as you like, and it will not break you out, or irritate the skin. The ALTRUIST Primer has been designed for sensitive skin, so if you are having a lot of skin problems, this is the Primer for you.

The primer is designed to be compact, so easy to throw in your bag, or in your makeup bag. Though small, if the primer is used as the only SPF sunscreen product  in your routine, this will last for about a week in the winter, or for a few days in the summer. However, if you use it as an extra layer of protection on top of your sunscreen, then this primer should last you for a good week and a half. Many dermatologists advocate double layering sunscreen to try to achieve the labelled SPF, given that most people normally don’t apply enough. Thus applying sunscreen and then applying shortly after will give optimum protection.

Considering that it is a two in one product, it is also a great cost saver and staple piece for your makeup collection. We recommend that you still apply the recommended amount of sunscreen under the primer if possible, which is about a shot glass for the whole body every time you apply.

ALTRUIST Primer SPF50 serves an extra bit of protection that also helps to keep your makeup in place. Layering products that contain a bit of SPF, will not result in a total of the SPF factors being added together, thus boosting protection. As an example wearing a moisturiser with SPF 15 together with a foundation with SPF 15 does not equal a protection of SPF30, but it will increase the likelihood of achieving the labelled SPF. [3]

For this reason, adding a product to your routine like the ALTRUIST Primer SPF50, will allow you to be protected a lot more than any product with a bit of SPF15 could. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends wearing a water-resistant, broad spectrum sunscreen that is at least SPF30. The sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before leaving the house, ideally. [4]

ALTRUIST primer SPF50 makes it easier to incorporate SPF50 into your routine. It is important to note that relying on high SPF sunscreens alone is not enough. Sunscreen is one part of the strategy and seeking shade, covering up with clothing or wearing UV protective hats and clothing should also be a part of this strategy.
