Why daily sun protection is essential

A day cream with SPF is no longer a luxury, it’s a daily essential for anyone who wants to keep their skin healthy and youthful. The sun is responsible for up to 80% of visible skin ageing, including wrinkles, pigmentation, sagging and dullness.

Many people still believe that sun damage only occurs in summer, yet UVA radiation penetrates clouds and glass all year round. Even a quick trip to the shop or sitting by a window contributes to cumulative damage over time. That’s why dermatologists worldwide agree: applying SPF every single day is the most effective anti-ageing step you can take.

How SPF works – the science of protection
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures how effectively a product protects against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. However, UVA rays — which penetrate deeper into the skin and damage collagen — are just as harmful.

A good day cream with sun protection should always offer broad-spectrum coverage, meaning it shields against both UVA and UVB radiation. To achieve this, two main types of filters are used:

  • Chemical filters, such as avobenzone or octocrylene, which absorb UV rays and convert them into harmless heat.

  • Mineral filters, such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which reflect UV radiation like a mirror.

Many Altruist formulas use a hybrid system that combines both for optimal protection and a light, non-greasy texture suitable for daily wear.

The benefits of a day cream with SPF

A day cream with SPF offers several practical benefits for everyday use.

1. One less step in your routine

Combining hydration and protection makes it easier to stay consistent. It’s a simple solution for anyone who doesn’t like layering multiple products.

2. Hydration and protection in one

A high-quality day cream with SPF also contains moisturising ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid or panthenol, which help prevent dryness caused by sun exposure or air conditioning.

3. Prevents premature skin ageing

Applying SPF30 or SPF50 daily helps to reduce fine lines, dark spots and loss of elasticity. Research shows that people who use SPF every day show significantly less visible ageing later in life — even in low sunlight exposure.

4. Perfect under make-up

Lightweight formulas like Altruist Face Fluid SPF50 absorb quickly, leave no shine and create a smooth base for make-up application.

The pitfalls – why a day cream with SPF isn’t always enough

Although combining skincare and sun protection sounds ideal, there are some important limitations to consider.

1. SPF ratings are based on lab quantities

SPF values are determined using 2 mg of product per cm² of skin. In reality, most people apply about half that amount — meaning the actual protection is roughly halved. If you apply a thin layer of SPF15, you’re likely only getting about SPF7–8.

2. Insufficient protection level

Most day creams contain SPF15 or SPF20, which isn’t enough to prevent daily UV damage. Dermatologists recommend at least SPF30, and preferably SPF50 for sensitive or fair skin.

3. No reapplication during the day

UV filters break down after a few hours due to light, sweat or friction. Since few people reapply their day cream, the protection gradually fades throughout the day.

4. Uneven application

Day cream tends to be applied too thinly around the nose, hairline and jaw — exactly where sun damage often appears first.

SPF under make-up – facts & misconceptions

A common claim is: “My foundation contains SPF, so I’m protected.” Unfortunately, that’s not true. Make-up with SPF rarely provides adequate protection because you simply don’t apply enough. To achieve SPF30 coverage, you would need several thick layers of foundation — which isn’t practical.

The correct order is:

  1. Apply a dedicated sunscreen or SPF50 day cream to clean skin.

  1. Allow it to absorb for about five minutes.

  1. Then apply make-up.

To refresh protection throughout the day, use an SPF mist or powder that can be applied over make-up.

SPF + antioxidants = the ultimate duo

Modern sun protection goes beyond UV filters alone. Many advanced formulas now include antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C or niacinamide. These neutralise free radicals generated by UV exposure and pollution.

SPF prevents direct UV damage, while antioxidants repair and protect against oxidative stress. Together, they form a two-layer defence system:

  • SPF → blocks UV damage

  • Antioxidants → neutralise remaining free radicals

Most Altruist formulations already combine these two approaches, offering both protection and improved skin health.

How to recognise the best day cream with SPF

The ideal day cream with sun protection meets several dermatological criteria:

  • SPF 30 or higher, preferably SPF 50

  • Broad-spectrum (UVA + UVB) protection

  • Non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores)

  • Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic

  • Dermatologically tested

  • Enriched with antioxidants or hydrating ingredients

Texture matters too: a lightweight, fast-absorbing cream is far more likely to be used consistently — and consistency is key to real results.

The role of SPF in skin ageing

UV exposure damages the DNA of skin cells, triggers enzymes that break down collagen and disrupts pigment production. Even low-level, indirect light exposure causes photoageing — fine lines, roughness and uneven tone.

Daily SPF use can delay visible signs of ageing by up to 24%, according to research published in Dermatologic Surgery.

As Altruist founder and consultant dermatologist Dr Andrew Birnie explains:

“The best anti-ageing cream isn’t a night cream packed with retinol — it’s a sunscreen you apply every morning.”

Practical tips for daily use

  • Use about half a teaspoon for face and neck.

  • Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure.

  • Reapply every 2–3 hours, especially outdoors.

  • Combine with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to maintain the skin barrier.

  • In the evening, follow with a repairing serum containing niacinamide or panthenol.

Convenience is great – but knowledge is power

A day cream with SPF is a fantastic step towards better skin protection — but only when used correctly. Understanding how SPF works helps you make smarter choices: it’s not just about the number on the label, but how much you apply, how often and how effectively.

For true daily defence, use a dermatologist-tested sunscreen with a high SPF, either on its own or layered over your favourite moisturiser. That way, you’ll enjoy the comfort of skincare and the confidence of genuine protection every single day.
